Information on the new Canada Dental Care Program (CDCP)

The Government of Canada plan for uninsured Canadian residents

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) provides dental care coverage to Canadian residents who have an adjusted family net income below $90,000 and who don’t have access to dental insurance. For eligible Canadians, the CDCP will help cover a portion of the cost of various oral health care services.

Complimentary coverage

Your Dental Assistance for Seniors Program (DASP) provided for by the Government of Alberta does not affect your eligibility for the CDCP.  In fact, both programs will be used jointly providing two sources of possible coverage.

Beware of scammers

Service Canada is aware of scams targeting Canadians related to the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). If you are concerned about the legitimacy of a letter, you received regarding CDCP, you can contact 1-833-537-4342 (TTY: 1-833-677-6262).

Step counter

Once you’ve applied through the government of Canada and they have confirmed that you qualify, they will share your information with Sun Life, who will enroll you in the CDCP.  Patients must first confirm their enrollment in the program to receive their confirmation of coverage card.

Beware the scams

Sun Life is aware of phishing scams targeting Canadians related to the launch of the Canadian Dental Care Plan.  Sun Life will never ask for personal or financial information related to this plan.

Ready to go

Once enrolled, Sun Life will send you a welcome package, which will include:

  • information on the CDCP

  • your member card

  • your coverage start date

Application Schedule

  • Seniors aged 87 and above – started December 2023

  • Seniors aged 77 to 86 – started January 2024

  • Seniors aged 72 to 76 – started February 2024

  • Seniors aged 70 to 71 – starts March 2024

  • Seniors aged 65 to 69 – starts May 2024

  • Adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate – starts June 2024

  • Children under the age of 18 – starts June 2024

  • All remaining eligible Canadian residents – starts 2025
